Planes, construction of; steering, balancing, and regulating altitude.-In a wing of the kind comprising a fixed central section and hinged front and rear sections, connected together so as to be moved simultaneously in opposite angular directions, the movable sections B, C, are so formed as to provide the entire upper wing surface. In both the forms shown, the movable sections are carried by spars b, c, rotatable in bearings b', c<1> at the ends of the usual compression struts d. The trailing margin f of the front section may be arranged permanently or in some definite angular positions to project above the leading edge of the rear section. Simultaneous adjustment is provided by means of links k, as shown in Fig. 1, or a link n, as shown in Fig. 3, or, according to the Provisional Spfcihcation, by means of cables. The sections are independently covered with fabric &c., and part or the whole of the bottom covering a may be made removable for inspecting the interior. The centres of pressure of the movable sections are situated substantially directly over the hinge-axes. Lateral control may be provided by hinged flaps or ailerons on the trailing margin of the rear section or by varying the camber of one wing to an extent different from that of the other. The movable sections may be divided transversely of the direction of flight into two or more portions with means for enabling them to be adjusted angularly or otherwise controlled as described in Specifications 135,520, 135,521, 135,522, 216,594, 217,974, and 232,693.
