Abstract
546,210. Aircraft controls. GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and WELS, O. Feb. 12, 1941, No. 1946. [Class 4] An aircraft control column which is rotated to actuate the ailerons and moved longitudinally to actuate the elevator has a hand-grip mounted concentrically with the column but upon a cranked extension thereof so as to clear an instrument board or other obstruction. The hand-grip may be adjusted axially of the column. In one form two hand grips 9 forming part of a wheel concentric with a horizontal column 7 are mounted upon a cranked extension 8 of the column. The column 7 rotates in a sleeve 10 mounted upon two normally vertical links 13, 14 and carries a lever 19 for actuating the aileron controls. A lever 20 on the link 13 actuates the elevator controls. The two links are of unequal length so that the grip does not change its vertical position as the column is moved axially. In another form the column 7 is suspended from a pair of links. In still another form the extension 8 is suspended by links from the main column the links forming the only connection between them. In this case only the extension 8 moves axially. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the extension 8 is carried by a bracket 26 from a squared shaft 7 sliding in sleeves 22, 23, the former having a lever 24 for actuating the ailerons. In all cases the grips 9 are mounted on a sleeve splined to the extension 8 the sleeve being movable axially over the extension 8 by a screw turned by a knob 30.
