Abstract
561,813. Aircraft controls. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH AIRCRAFT, Ltd., SIR W. G., THOMPSON, J. A., and CAMPBELL, A. H. Dec. 8, 1942, No. 17420. [Class 4] A unit to be fitted to an aircraft for the control of the elevator, ailerons and rudder includes in the example shown a stationary casing 11 containing a telescopic control rod of which a tubular part 12 is axially movable for controlling through a rack 15 a sprocket E actuating the elevator and another part 32 is rotatable to actuate an aileron control sprocket A on its end remote from the controlling wheel 13. As shown in Fig. 7, the wheel 13 is secured on the reduced end of a tube 31 which is rotatable within the part 12 and axially movable with it ; the tube 31 communicates its rotary movement to the part 32 through a sliding splined connection including the balls 33. A shaft 36 carrying a rudder-control sprocket R is actuated through a gear-box 37 with foot-actuated bars 39 on each side, adjustment of the connections of these bars being effected by a handle 48 and jointed shaft 47. Automatic servo-controls may be added to the unit. To lock the elevator a clamping ring 23 is provided round the part 12.
