Abstract

644,357. Controlling aircraft; boundary layer control. STALKER, E. A. Oct. 16, 1946, No. 30799. Convention date, Aug. 22, 1940. [Class 4] The wings of an aircraft are provided with slots in their upper surfaces, which are so controlled that the strongest discharge takes place through the slot on the wing with a lowered control surface, e.g. an aileron, and produces at the same time a rolling moment accompanied by a favourable yawing moment. As shown, inboard flaps 6 and ailerons 4 are carried by full-span flaps 5, slots 8, 8a being formed in the upper surfaces of the flaps through which boundary layer air is sucked by a blower 9, which in turn discharges the air through slots 10, 11 in the flaps 5 and ailerons 4 respectively. The ailerons are operated in the normal manner by chain and sprocket gearing 13, 13a which operates screwed shafts 16 jointed to the ailerons at 16b, the width of the discharge slot 11 of the lowered aileron being increased and that of the raised aileron being decreased. In the fully raised position of the aileron the slot 11 is closed. The increased drag on the lowered aileron is counteracted by the thrust of the air discharged through the associated slot 11, thus reducing the adverse yawing moment. Fig. 8 shows an elevator 21 over which air supplied through the fuselage is normally discharged over the upper and lower surfaces through slots 23, 24. Movement of the elevator increases the width of the slot on the convex side of the surface to augment the control force on the tail plane. Such an arrangement may also be employed with the rudder.
