Abstract
494,087. Burners ; stoves. BATT, C., and BATT, E. W. March 16, 1937, No. 7706. [Classes 75 (i) and 126] In a gas or vapour burner in which combustion takes place in a thin space between two gauzes, perforated plates or the like, so that the front gauze &c. becomes incandescent, the total area of the. apertures in the front gauze &c. is greater than that of the apertures in the back gauze &c. The individual apertures in the front gauze &c. may be larger than those in the back gauze &c. The back gauze &c. may comprise two or more thicknesses, the apertures of a rearward thickness and their total area being larger than those of a forward thickness. In the gas-fire burner shown in Figs. 1 and 2, detachable perforated metal plates c are mounted behind detachable wire gauzes d in the front of a wedge-shaped mixing- chamber b communicating through holes or a slot with a mixing-tube a. The separate plates and gauzes may be replaced by a single plate and gauze. In a modification, a series of concentric perforated metal tubes and tubular wire gauzes are closed at the top and mounted at the bottom on a mixing-tube, communicating with the metal tubes. A ring burner may be provided with an annular plate j and gauze k, Fig. 5, or with a series of circular plates and gauzes in cups around the ring. A grill burner, Fig. 9, comprises a pair of plates q and gauzes r secured between a mixing-tube o and a casing p. The metal plates may be replaced by refractory plates and the gauzes by perforated plates or grids of metal or refractory material, such as silica.
