Abstract

492,824. Saddles. JELLEY, J. G. April 16, 1937, Nos. 10848 and 31565. [Class 136 (iii)] A flexible cycle saddle top of leather, moulded rubber, &c. is formed or provided with inturned parts adapted for detachable engagement with the nose and cantle plates, whereby the employment of rivets is avoided, and detachment of the saddle top from the plates can be readily effected after release of the usual screw &c. tensioning-device. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the flexible top a is formed with an inwardly-curled edge or lip a3 adapted to engage under the web of the cantle-plate c, and a similar lip engages the nose-plate, so that when the tensioning-screw is tightened the lips interlock with the plates. The curled edge may be strengthened by a metal liner. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the continuous lip is replaced by a series of inturned tongues e having metal liners e<1>, and a rubber pad or buffer f is solutioned or moulded to the inside of the seat a to engage the cantle-plate c. In other forms, a strip of wedge-shaped section is solutioned or moulded around the interior of the skirt of the saddle top to form the inwardly-projecting part. The rear web of the cantle-plate may alternatively be formed with a rearwardly-projecting rib to engage a groove in the skirt of the top, or in a rubber buffer attached thereto ; or the skirt may be moulded with a series of studs adapted to engage apertures in the rear web of the cantleplate. The peak end of the top may be bridged between the skirts, the bridge being adapted to engage beneath the nose-plate. The bridge may consist of an attached transverse member, or may comprise two inturned tongues formed on the skirts and strengthened by a metal stirrup or sheath.
