Abstract
491,335. Gate fastenings. HODSON, C.E. May 8, 1937, No. 13198. [Class 44] In a gate fastening the movable catch member has an adjustable stop which co-operates with a fixed member to support the free end of the gate in the closed position. Fig. 1 shows a depending L-shaped bar pivoted on the gate E at C and with a vertical limb which engages, under gravity, a notch in the edge of a horizontal plate D fixed on the post E<1>. The horizontal limb acts as a counterweight and its end, which may have a nut, serves as a handle to release the fastening. The vertical limb is threaded to receive a nut A which rides on to the upper surface of plate D to support the gate. Fig. 4 shows a bar C the fixed lower end of which acts as a spring biassing the bar to engaging position, movement being limited by a fixed loop E<2>. In a modification the bar is loosely mounted at its lower end and and engages under gravity, the operating knob C3 being off-set to act as counterweight. The nut A may be held in adjusted position by a locknut, and the fixed supporting plate may be independent of the catch plate D.
