Abstract

383,411. Stays ; door stops and holders; stud-and-socket fastenings. WOODWARD, R. H., WOODWARD, B. A., 23, Legge Lane, Birmingham, and ANDERSON, J. R., 32, Riches Street, Wolverhampton. Nov. 10, 1931, No. 31188. [Classes 44 and 65 (i).] A retaining device for slidable or movable members which are provided with one or more holes, recesses or projections comprises a body in which is slidably mounted a hollow catch member having a pin or the like adapted for engagement with one of the said holes, recesses or projections, a spiral or conical spring being disposed between the catch member and the body to move the catch member into the engaging position ; a spiral or conical spring is used in order to allow the height of the device to be reduced to a minimum, since the coils of such a spring, when compressed, fit inside one another. Fig. 3 is a section through the device as applied to a casement stay comprising a bar 6 hinged at one end to the window and sliding through a retaining device mounted on the window frame. The body 8 of the retaining device is pivoted on a fixing plate 10 and has apertures 9 through which the stay bar passes, these apertures having curved upper edges to contact with the edges only of the stay bar to avoid scratching the surface thereof. In the body 8 is slidably mounted a member 12 which has a large aperture 13 for the stay bar and has a pin 15 fixed in its lower part to engage with recesses 14 in the stay bar; the member 12 is pressed upwardly by a conical spring 17 housed in the bottom of the body 8, and the stay is disengaged from the device by pressing down the member 12, against the spring, to bring the pin 15 clear of the stay bar. Fig. 4 shows a door holder of the stud-and-socket type, comprising a stud 21 fixed on the door and arranged to enter a retaining device 23, similar to that described above, fixed in the required position for holding the door. The sliding member 24 of the retaining device carries a screw 25, the end of which is shaped to engage a groove 22 in the stud 21 under the action of the conical spring 26 pressing on the member 24. The neck of the stud 21 carries a rubber buffer ring 32, adapted to contact with the body 23 of the holder.
