Abstract

485,621. Cylinders. TSUNEDA, K. Nov. 18, 1936, No. 31650. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, May 19, 1937.] [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] The compression ratio of an engine cylinder is varied by reciprocation of an auxiliary piston 5, through a threaded rod 7, a nut 10 and a rack 11, operated in accordance with the working of the engine. As shown t he rod is connected to a servomotor piston 14 subject to high-pressure gas tapped from the combustion chambers by a pipe 16. A spring-loaded double-faced valve 12 vents the space under the piston 14, which is returned by a spring 18, until the pressure is high enough to lift the valve. Cooling fluid is admitted to the interior of the piston 5 by a pipe 21 which has sufficient clearance 20 in a hollow interior of the rod 7 to allow return flow of the fluid. The nut 10 is mounted on ball-bearings 26. In alternative arrangements the rack may be operated in accordance with the temperature of the combustion gas or the vacuum in the induction pipe.
