Abstract

485,256. Safety valves. GROSBY STEAM GAGE & VALVE CO., and KLAFSTAD, E. Aug. 21, 1937, No. 22990. [Class 135] In a spring-loaded safety valve in which the valve member or disc 20 is guided in a direction normal to the valve seat 22 by a tubular sleeve 28, the valve spindle 50 is sufficiently robust to avoid buckling by the loading spring 76 which acts on its outer end and is guided near its ends by separate guides 60, 62 so as to avoid the transmission of side thrusts to the valve disc. The valve seat 22 is formed on a flanged nozzle 16 screwed into the inlet of the valve housing 10 and carrying an adjustable screwed sleeve 34 with teeth 38 which can be engaged by an externally - operable set screw 36 to maintain the adjustment. A similar sleeve 40 is provided on the guide sleeve 28 and has teeth 44 engaging a set screw 42. The valve member 20 has an insert 24 mounted for slight rocking movements by a pin 26 and carries a nut 56 in which the spindle 50 is a close fit so that the valve can rotate relative thereto without any tendency to tilt. A ball thrust bearing 54 is interposed between the valve and spindle the parts being held together by a spring ring 55. The lower guide sleeve 60 is ported and is mounted in the sleeve 28 which is clamped to the valve housing 10 by a cooling extension 32 with radial fins between which steam is deflected by a collar 74. The upper guide 62 is mounted in the valve bonnet 72. The spindle 50 has a rounded end to co-operate with a spring seat 78 and carries an extension 84 passing through a spring adjustment sleeve 82 and carrying a collar 90 for engagement by a manually-operable lever 86.
