Abstract
In a light metal piston having an insert of austenitic cast iron or steel, the iron &c. has a coefficient of expansion which is more than 10 per cent less than that of the light metal and may be about 20 per cent less. A suitable light metal comprises 4 per cent copper, 2 per cent nickel, 1 1/2 per cent magnesium, and balance aluminium. The austenitic cast iron may comprise 3,5 per cent carbon, 2 per cent silicon, 0,2 per cent phosphorus, 0,9 per cent manganese, 12-16 per cent nickel, 2,25 per cent chromium, and 6 per cent copper.
