Abstract

A light metal piston having an insert of hard metal of similar coefficient of expansion, may be made of an aluminium-silicon alloy containing 12-14 per cent of silicon. The insert may be made of cast iron containing 18-20 per cent of nickel; or 16 per cent of nickel and 2-3 per cent of copper; or about 5 per cent of manganese and up to 11,5 per cent of nickel, with or without up to 4,5 per cent of aluminium or copper or both.
