Abstract

Cylinders; pistons.-A cylinder for an internalcombustion engine is made of aluminium, magnesium or an alloy thereof which may contain silicon and has a high coefficient of expansion, and has a liner of a ferrous metal having a coefficient of expansion greater than 16 x 10<-6> per degree Centigrade. The piston may be made, either entirely or in part, of either of the two metals, but is preferably made of a non-ferrous metal similar to that of the cylinder. It may, however, be made of a metal having a coefficient of expansion slightly less than that of the liner. Examples of the ferrous metal are (a) a steel or a cast iron containing 15 to 25 per cent of nickel or 8 to 13 per cent of manganese or a combination of 15 to 25 units of the two counting 1 per cent of nickel as one unit and 1 per cent of manganese as 2.15 units; (b) an austenitic steel containing 18 per cent of chromium and 8 per cent of nickel; or (c) a cast iron containing approximately 14 per cent of silicon.
