Abstract

483,826. Discharge apparatus. MARCONI'S WIRELESS'TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Oct. 26, 1936, No. 29037. Convention date, Oct. 25, 1935. [Class 39 (i)] An electron lens, which is adapted to reproduce with unity magnification the electron-emitting surface of one electrode 1, Fig. 1, onto another electrode 3, comprises two members 2, 4 of the same diameter, the length of the member 2 being less than, e.g. two-thirds of, the diameter and the length of the member 4 being greater than, e.g. twice or four thirds, the diameter, and the longer member 4 being at a positive potential with respect to the member 2. The distance s should not be greater than three per cent of the total length. An electron multiplier comprises a photo-sensitive cathode 16, Fig. 2, target electrodes 18, 20 and an anode 22. Electron lenses are formed by members 16a, 18b ; 18a, 20b. The cathode 16 and the target 20 are provided with further cylinders 16b, 20a respectively. The electrodes are arranged at 45‹ with respect to the axis of the cylinders. The electrode potentials may be obtained from a potentiometer and a thermionic cathode may be used.
