Abstract

480,522. Rotary pumps. DUNCAN, W. O. (Bendix Aviation Corporation) May 23, 1936, No. 14622. [Class 110 (ii)] In a rotary vacuum pump sliding vanes 26 are pressed outwards by oil under pressure fed through a passage 38 in the shaft 14, and through radial ducts 40. Spring rings clipped into the ends of the rotor 24 also bear on the inner ends of the vanes which are made of an aluminium alloy. The casing 10 is a die casting in a light alloy fitted with a cast iron liner 20 which extends axially into grooves cut in the casing end walls. The rotor is of aluminium and is cast on the shaft 14 which is preferably steel. Pressure oil is obtained from the engine driving the pump, or from a separate pump. The oil passes outwards along the vane slots to seal and lubricate the pump parts. The pump may be used to operate vacuum brakes and may be used in co-operation with a reserve tank. The outlet port 46 comprises a number of slots in the liner 20, and may lead to the engine crank-case.
