Abstract

456,808. Oscillating - vane internalcombustion engines. BABEL, R., 41, Avenue LÚon Gambetta, Clichy, Seine, France. March 12, 1936, Nos. 7481 and 7482. Convention dates, March 13, 1935 and Feb. 17, 1936. [Class 110 (ii)] An internal-combustion oscillating-vane type of engine has the end face of the hub from which the vanes extend packed by means of an axially spring- or fluid-pressed annular split ring located in a housing in the casing and elastically applying its cylindrical surface against the cylindrical wall of the housing. Instead of the annular split ring a piston with packing rings may be used. The Figure shows a section through two diametral vanes 6, 7 which are secured on the hollow shaft by a flush screwed-in ring 25 which thus forms the central portion of the hub. The annular split ring 20 has its cut situated against one of the abutments and is prevented from turning by a tongue and groove arrangement at the region of the other abutment. The ring is pressed axially by a spring or the pressure gases and pressure oil which passes through orifices into grooves on the face of the ring to provide a sealing and lubricating film. Cooling fluid is circulated by an impeller 14 through a tube 11 extending inside the shaft to the vanes, thence by the hollow shaft 12 and a pipe 13 to the abutments and the casing jacket and so to a radiator, the fan 17 of which may be on the same shaft as the impeller. Only the vanes may be fluid-cooled, this being effected by circulating the lubricating oil from the driving- mechanism casing.
