Abstract
526,260. Gear pumps. JOHNSON, J. P. March 10, 1939, No. 7878. Convention date, March 18, 1938: [Class 110 (ii)] A gear pump is provided with a casing and end cover of a light metal such as aluminium, and linings 19, 31, made of a heavier metal such as bronze. The bronze linings may be cast to shape, and the casings cast around them. Gears 20, 23, have axial extensions 21, 22, 24, 25, running in the bearings of bronze. Flats 35 on the bearings prevent their rotation. A flexible disc 48 is placed between a disc 47 of bronze and an end wall 50 and a gasket 53 is also provided. To prevent rotation of discs 47, 48, one or more pins 54, secured to the wall 50, extend through holes in the discs. A collar 45 has running engagement with the disc 47 and is acted upon by fluid under delivery pressure. A ball valve 63 is opened if the pressure within the chamber 57 reaches a predetermined figure, and allows fluid to pass to the pump inlet. An axial opening 67 may be provided in the gear 23 to allow passage of any leakage fluid back to the inlet. If the pump is to be reversed, the cover is removed, rotated 180 degrees, and again fixed to the pump casing. Drain plugs 70 are provided to release any oil which may pass along the shaft 40 from the engine driving the pump.
