Abstract
474,336. Lubricating; cooling cylinders. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Feb. 12, 1937, No. 4197. Convention date, July 9, 1936. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] The shafts'29 of circulating-water pumps 33 are lubricated from the main engine lubricating system by lubricant which is thrown by a gear wheel 39 on the main shaft into pockets 41, 42, Fig. 2, and thus into chambers 27, from which it percolates, preferably through porous bronze bushes 28, on to the shafts. In a V-engine two water pumps are each mounted on a casing 19 integral with an engine supporting bracket 26 and a water inlet-hose connection 21 ; the two pumps and the raditor fan are driven by the same belt 18. Any water seeping past a packing, comprising a spring-pressed carbon disc 35 and a rubber sleeve 37, passes down a passage 38 on to the driving pulley, whence it is removed by centrifugal action. Each pump impeller 31 rotates adjacent a machined face 12 of the cylinder block ; to allow for the staggered arrangement of cylinders, one face is formed on the wall of an exhaust passage as shown, while the other is formed on a baffle in front of the corresponding passage. A passage 52 prevents end thrust developing from fluid pressure. Aligned ports 49, 50 allow the cylinders to empty when a radiator drain cock is opened.
