Abstract

729,420. Rotary pumps. TRICO PRODUCTS CORPORATION. Dec. 17, 1953 [Dec. 22, 1952], No. 35191/53. Class 110 (2). A gas pump of the outwardly-sliding vane type has oil sealing between the rotor and the working-chamber bore; the rotor ends and the casing. An oil-leakage collecting-groove 40 is provided in the pump end wall 10, adjacent a driving shaft coupling 24,' preventing the passage of oil along a shaft 3, which may be the generator shaft of an internal-combustion engine. As shown, the pump acts as a suction pump for actuating a windscreen-wiper motor of a motor car by causing a partial vacuum in a pipe 30 leading to the motor 31, Fig. 1 (not shown). The end wall 10 has bracket parts 13 for mounting the pump on the generator frame by screws 14, and also a centring boss 15 engaged within a counterbored seat 16 in a journal bearing 4. The bottoms of the vane slots are in communication through ports 19 so that sealing and lubrication liquid, or a gas, will surge back and forth under the vane movements, an inwardly-moving vane thus thrusting outwards another vane. The end faces of the rotor are provided with oil-collecting grooves 20. A stub shaft 22 is hollow to allow the entry of lubricant supplied through a pipe 35 from the engine crankcase to which the pump delivery and the excess lubricant are returned by way of a pipe 36, Fig. 2 (not shown). A non-return valve 37, Fig. 8 (not shown), prevents lubricant passing to the windscreen motor, or other accessory, when the latter is not in use. An oilcollecting well 39, about the coupling 24, prevents the passage of oil along the shaft and into the generator, the drain 40 leading to the pump inlet. The well is open to the atmosphere.
