Abstract

1329317 Lubricating I.C. engines H LIST 25 Nov 1971 [ 7 Jan 1971] 54751/71 Heading F1B In an I. C. engine for oil testing, separate lubricant circuits are provided for the test oil and the ordinary lubricating oil, the oil-wetted engine interior being divided into separate oil zones sealed off from each other, each oil zone being associated with one of the two lubricating circuits. The main bearings 13, 14, Fig.2 are sealed from the crank-case 6 by seals 16. The annular space between bearing 13 and the adjacent seal 16 communicates with the housing for the gears driving the fuel pump 45 and the balance shaft 8 through ducts 17. The housing 11 is drained into chamber 7 through a closable port 39. A similar annular space is drained through duct 17a chambers 20 and 22 to chamber 7. The test oil flows through passage 24 to bearing 25 and piston 26. Oil from the valve gear drains through a hole 27, Fig. 1 into the cam-shaft housing and thence via hole 30 to chamber 6. The test oil drains into sump 31 and passes via an oil filter and cooler (not shown) to the circulating system. The oil in sump 37 returns to a separate circulating system. The two lubricant circuits arranged thus permit the test oil to be applied to those parts having heavy mechanical and thermal stresses. In another testing mode the test oil is allowed to impinge on the balancing shafts 8 by removing plate 9. In another embodiment joints 16 are omitted and a seal is arranged between the drive wheel.cover and the main bearings 13 so that the latter is included in the test oil circuit. In another embodiment only the pistons are included in the test oil circuit by arranging a spacer 50 Fig. 5 between the cylinder and crank-case, the piston being connected to a crosshead 51 by a rod 54 which passes through a stuffing-box 55. The test oil is delivered through a spray nozzle 57 and drained via duct 58. (For Figures see next page)
