Abstract
381,371. Rotary pumps ; stuffing- boxes. FREY, S., 11, Am Park, Schoneberg, and VOELK, O., 31, Kleiststrasse, Steglitz, both in Berlin. Nov. 6, 1931, No. 30817. Convention date, July 10. [Classes 110 (ii) and 122 (v).] The curved vanes of a rotary pump are designed to have a specific gravity less than 2. The vanes 4a may be made of glass or pressed insulating materials with metal (such as brass or steel) inserts 6 and the vane pockets are lined with metal. The casing and rotor may also be formed of glass, ceramic materials or other non-metallic materials such as that registered under the Trade Mark of " Bakelite." For pumping acids the casing would be constructed of acid-proof material. The pump is designed to prevent contact between metallic and non- metallic materials. The liners 5 do not quite extend to the periphery of the rotor 2. The blades are given a radius of curvature such that they quickly respond to centrifugal action, but pressure in the working chamber C tends to force the blade 4a inwards and relieve pressure on the casing wall. The pump may operate vertically. Recesses g in the front of a blade are provided so that fluid pressure helps to withdraw the blade. The casing end wall 7 is held in position by a screwed ring 8, and a helical spring 11 acts between the packing glands 9, 10. Hemp and leather packing 12 may be used.
