421,457. Rotary pumps. GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION, Gulf Building, 7th Avenue, Pittsburg, U.S.A. Aug. 8, 1934, No. 22956. Convention date, Jan. 11. [Class 110 (ii)] In a rotary pump of the type in which meshing rotors have n and n + 1 lobes, a metallic packing strip 9 bears on the periphery of the rotor 4 in the neighbourhood of the outlet chamber 8, and means are supplied to reduce the pressure on the back of the strip 9 to below that existing in the outlet chamber 8. In one form a rubber filling 10 fits over the strip in the recesses provided in the casing 1. The area of the edge 13 of this filling, which is exposed to the delivery pressure, is less than the area of the back of the strip 9. A slot may be cut into the filling 13 extending part of the way across the strip 9. In another form a U-shaped metallic diaphragm is attached by brazing, or otherwise, to the casing and to the back of the strip 9. A further modification describes a flat, bent, metal strip which is attached to the casing and also bears upon part of the back of the strip. The strip may be made of nitrided steel, babbitt-faced steel, or a combination of graphite and brass. The invention is stated to be applicable to centrifugal pumps, turbines and hydraulic motors.
