[Class 127] [Also in Group XIII] Flowing masses of a starch-containing raw material are digested and hydrolized by repeated treatment with fresh steam jets over large effective surfaces. The material mixed with water is fed by a pump to the top of a column in sections, each comprising a charging hopper 1 with an outlet nozzle 5 surrounded by a narrow annular nozzle 4 admitting steam under pressure from an inlet 3 and a mixing chamber 7 with a perforated bottom 10, the nozzles opening into said chamber being closed by a spring-pressed conical valve 6 on which the atomized mixture is thus spread as a thin layer. A central steam inlet may also be provided above the valve 6. Two or more columns each with a delivery pump in front may be connected in series, or each column section may have several nozzles and valves in parallel. The column may be mounted on a bracket 30 on a wall.
