438,744. Extruding rubber threads. KOLNISCHE GUMMIFADEN - FABRIK VORM. F. KOHLSTADT & CO., 129, Deutz M³lheimerstrasse, Deutz, Cologne, Germany. July 31, 1934, No. 22327. Convention date, July 31, 1933. [Classes 70 and 87 (ii)] Uniform rubber &c. threads are made by extending a rubber composition at a constant volumetric rate, and also by tapping off part of the composition before it reaches the nozzles, and returning it to the mass of rubber at the inlet side of the press. The composition is fed by a uniformlydriven screw backed by a hydraulic press exerting sufficient pressure to overcome the resiliency of the mix. Rubber mix is forced from a press 11 through a strainer 14 to the inlet 10 of a steam - jacketed screw press, the screw 4 of which decreases in pitch towards the outlet to eliminate air bubbles. The mix passes through a strainer 15 to a chamber 17 with an air escape cock 18 whence the bulk is passed back to the inlet 10 by a pipe 20 which may be steam jacketed, while the remainder is forced through nozzles in a plate 22 to form threads 23 which are deposited on a conveyer 24. The thickness of the threads can be modified by raising or lowering the conveyer, or by stretching them between pairs of rolls rotating at different speeds, and immersed if desired in hot water.
