Abstract
469,589. Aerials. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Jan. 29, 1937, No. 2726. Convention date, March 17, 1936. [Class 40 (v)] A bi-directional aerial, approximately a wavelength long, and suitable for use on board ship, comprises two parallel wires 11, 12 connected together at one end by a wire 13, one limb being terminated by an impedance 16, and the other being coupled at 14 to a transmission line 15 leading to a transmitter or receiver 17. The arrangement ensures an approximately-constant end-impedance at 14 over a range of frequencies. The two wires 11, 12 may be continued over the top of the mast or tower 18 and down to form an inverted- V, with the link 13 at the lower end. The optimum angle of inclination of the wires to the vertical varies with the overall length of the wires, measured in wavelengths. As shown in Fig. 3, undesirable re-radiation from a nearby stay-wire 30 is minimized by the provision of one or more auxiliary wires, such as 31, which may include a series resistance, and serve to detune the stay at one or more frequencies. Similar wires may be provided near the top end of the stay-wire 33.
