Abstract
489,775. Directive wireless signalling; aerials. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Feb. 3, 1937, No. 3239. Convention date, Feb. 3, 1936. [Class 40 (v)] A broadcasting aerial for uniform and maximum radiation in the horizontal plane comprises a straight tubular conductor 1, the bottom quarter wavelength of which is recessed in a conducting earthed roof top RT, and comprising radiating half wavelength sections 2 and a halfwavelength section 3 therebetween, the radiation from which is suppressed by a sleeve 4 which is earthed by a half wave - length connection 14 running through the tube 1. The sleeve 4 may be supported at its mid-point by an insulating or metallic ring member R from the tube 1, and an adjustable sleeve 5 at the upper end of the tube 1 is provided to enable the electrical length of the aerial to be varied. A transmission line TL connects the transmitter HFA to an adjustable tapping TP at the base of the aerial. The diameter of the tube 1 is made relatively large, e.g. one fifteenth of a wavelength to enable it to radiate a wide frequency band. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the aerial has several radiating portions separated by screened portions, the screens being earthed by conductors one or a multiple of half wavelengths long, and the aerial is inductively coupled to the transmission line. The aerials may be extended symmetrically from a centre to form an extended dipole antenna and may be arranged in arrays for additional directivity.
