Abstract
392,201. Directive aerials. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., Connaught House, Aldwych, London.- (Assignees of Bruce, E. ; 27, Buena Place, Red Bank, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Nov. 12, 1931, No. 31346. Convention date, Feb. 3. Addition to 353,517. [Class 40 (v).] A directive aerial of the type described in the parent Specification is adapted for highangle transmission or reception by arranging the V-shaped antennµ in an horizontal instead of a vertical plane. As shown in Fig. 1, the main aerial comprises conductors 1, 2 connected together at one end and diverging at the other. the major axis of directivity lying in the vertical plane containing the arrows A, B. A similar pair of V-shaped conductors 3, 4 acts as a counterpoisc. One end of the feed-line 8 is connected to the main aerial 1, 2 and the other end to the counterpoise 3, 4. The aerial and counterpoise are connected at the far end by a terminating impedance 9 having a value related to the surge impedance of the system so as to impart a unilateral directional effect. The impedance 9 may comprise an iron-wire or carbon resistance and a capacitive or inductive reactance. As shown in Fig. 2, the aerial system. is supported on poles 5 at a height of at least half the working wavelength above the ground. The optimum angle of reception or radiation is shown by the arrows C, D. The arrangement discriminates against horizontally-propagated waves, particularly local interference due' motor-cars and the like.
