Abstract
466,648. Latch knitting needles. PAGE, C. L. Sept. 29, 1936, No. 26375. Convention date, Oct. 4, 1935. [Class 74 (ii)] The under surface 17 of the top bar 10 of the hook of a latch needle is straight and horizontal (i.e. perpendicular to the needle shank) so that when two or more yarns are fed to the hook they will lie side by side under the top bar and all be drawn to the same extent through the old loops, forming loops of equal length. Furthermore the inner one of these yarns, or the yarn (if only one is fed) will lie in the inner corner 18 of the hook, thus decreasing the effective diameter of the needle cylinder. This inner corner 18 is slightly rounded. The check 7 of the needle is offset forwardly as shown, producing the concavity 19. By this means the old loop 16 has to traverse a longer path before reaching the latch, the closing- of which is therefore delayed, so allowing the newly fed yarn to be positioned higher in the throat before the latch closes, with the result that the yarn is not caught and damaged thereby : the consequent forward offsetting of the latch pivot 13 also widens the lower portin of the eye. The closing of the latch may also be delayed by forming on it an indentation 21 adjacent to the pivot 13, into which indentation the previously formed stitch moves as the needle is drawn through it.
