Circular machines.-To permit the production in machines with two coaxial needle cylinders of patterns formed by various combinations of rib and plain stitches and in particular the effect known as basket or double 1/1 stitch, which is produced by knitting two courses 1/1 rib followed by one course plain and then knitting two courses 1/1 rib reversed and one course plain, the top cam box 1 is provided with an auxiliary transfer cam 2 carried by a plunger 4 situated immediately above the plunger 5 of the usual transfer cam 3. The sliders 8 are of two kinds, one kind having short knitting butts 10 and tail butts 11, while the other kind has long knitting butts 9 and no tail butt or a short tail butt 39. The cam 3 acts only on the butts 9 and the cam 2 acts on the butts 11. The cams 2, 3 are operated from stops 26 on a pattern drum &c. through connections 22, 21, 18, 17 and a rocker 14, the arrangement being such that when the cam 2 is pressed into action by the rocker 14 the cam 3 is drawn out of action by a spring and vice versa. In a modified arrangement an additional rocker is employed to enable both cams 2, 3 to be pressed in at once to transfer all the needles to the bottom cylinder to make plain fabric. The butt 39 comes into action when it is required to move all the sliders 8 down. The bottom cam box may also be provided with an auxiliary transfer cam as above described.
