Straight - bar machines ; knitted fabrics.-The combined plain purl and missstitch effect shown in Fig. 3 is obtained on a machine with double-ended needles capable of being transferred across a gap between two coplanar beds 12, 12<a> by the use of jacks 42 and supplementary jacks 45 in connection with the needles that knit plain and purl stitches while the needles that knit the long miss-stitch loops are provided with jacks 42 only. When the jacks 42 have passed through the channel formed by the knitting cams 19, 20, 24 they are elevated on a hinged cam 31 and those jacks associated with the supplementary jacks 45 are lifted into the transfer channel 38, 39 by the action of the incline 52 on the butts 48 so that the corresponding needles are pushed across to the other bed, while the remaining needles, not being provided with jacks 45 are withdrawn, by the action of the incline 34 on the butts 44, and fail to clear their loops. On the return stroke these needles clear their loops, their jack butts 44 passing over a cam 27 while the needles transferred to the opposite bed first knit and then are transferred back. In this arrangement a cam 28 is kept out of action. Similar cams 26, 26<a> in the opposite bed are in action. If the cams 26<a>, 28 are both out of action tubular fabric is made.
