Abstract

466,052. Spring hinges. SALTER & CO., Ltd., G., and BACHE, R. S. Feb. 24, 1936, No. 5435. [Class 65 (ii)] A spring hinge for doors and the like, in which the spring is automatically rendered inoperative after a certain degree of opening so that the door will remain fully open without holding, the spring being automatically brought into action again when the closing movement of the door is started by hand, comprises a pair of leaves 1, 2 with outstanding lugs connected by a hinge pin 5 about which is placed a torsion spring 6 having its upper end 7 pressing on the leaf 2 and its lower end 8 pressing on leaf 1. The edge of the lower lug 2b of leaf 2 is turned up to form an inclined catch part 9 over which the end 8 of the spring will ride after a certain degree of opening, the end 8 then being held behind the part 9 and the spring pressure being consequently taken off the leaf 1. The edge of the lower lug 1b of leaf 1 is also turned up to form a cam 11, and when the leaves are moved towards the closing position this cam rides under the end 8 of the spring, pushing the latter up until it clears the catch part 9 and resumes its operative position against the leaf 1.
