Abstract

385,906. Spring hinges. NEWMAN & SONS, Ltd., W. and ROLLASON, S. A., 268, Hospital Street, Birmingham. Aug. 25, 1932, No. 23763. [Class 65 (ii).] In a door hinge comprising two leaves which tend to be pressed apart by a torsion spring, a spring-pressed plunger holds the hinge open. The door is closed by opening it slightly further outwards to release the plunger, and the torsion spring is enabled to operate. The two leaves 1, 2 are connected by trunnions 6, 7, supported in knuckles 4, 5, the spring 8 being initially stressed before being secured by the forked ends of the trunnions. A swivel bracket 15 on a shoulder 16 is anchored by a volute spring 19 so that between an extension 14 on the bracket and the inner edge 13 of the knuckle 4 is formed a recess 12 into which a plunger 9 slips when the door is held at right angles to the leaf 1. Opening the door further outwards the bevelled edge of the plunger 9 rides up-over the edge of the extension 14 and lodges in a recess 14a, Fig. 4. When the door is closed the plunger presses against the extention 14 to close the recess 12 by turning the bracket 15 against the action of its spring 19 until in the closed position the plunger leaves the recess 14a and rides on to the edge of the knuckle 14 and the bracket 15 is released. A pin 11 acts as a stop for the plunger 9. The device may be adapted for swing doors which open in both directions, two recesses 12 being provided in the knuckle 4.
