684,207. Door-operating appliances; hinges; pivoting adjustments. ELLISON BRONZE CO., Inc. Jan. 18, 1951 [Feb. 14, 1950], No. 1440/51. Classes 65 (i) and 65 (ii) A door closer and fluid check comprises a casing 10, a fixed shaft 13 mounted in the casing, a pinion 16 carried by the shaft, a member 20 slidably mounted in the casing and formed with a rack 22 engaging the pinion, a spring 23 abutting the member 20, a check cylinder 28 and piston 29, and a lever 53 pivoted at 54 to the casing, the lever being connected to the member 20 and to the check piston rod 30. The casing is adapted to fit within the side panels of a door D, and the shaft 13, which forms the hinge pivot of the door, is fixed non-rotatably in a bushing 15 secured to the floor. The member 20 carries a pair of spaced-apart racks, one or the other of which is adapted to engage the pinion when the swinging door D is opened. A link 56 connects one end of the lever to the piston rod, the other end of the lever carrying a pin 58 slidably disposed in a slot 59 formed in the member 20. The check piston is provided with a non-return ball valve 37, and a needle valve 44, accessible for adjustment from the edge of the door, controls a by-pass passage 42. A second needle valve and by-pass passage are provided to afford a differential checking effect. The slotted and grooved end of a pin 62, mounted centrally of the spring, is adapted to engage a grooved hole formed in the member 20 for holding the door open. As shown, the pin is formed with ridges 63 and 69 adapted to engage with grooves 65 and 66 for holding the door in any one of three separate open positions. In a modification the pin 58 is fixed and the fulcrum pin 54 is slidably mounted.
