Abstract

458,747. Stabilizing ships. ROCARD, Y. A., 120, Rue d'Assas, Paris. April 23, 1935, No. 12217. [Class 113 (i)] In a stabilizing system for ships the stabilizing couple which counteracts rolling is provided by an automatic control device which ensures that the couple is composed of three terms the first of which is substantially equal and opposite to the rolling couple and the second and third are functions of the rolling angle and its time derivatives. The rolling couple operating on the ship is measured by manometers arranged on either side of the ship whilst the rolling angle is measured by a gyroscope 12. These two valves converted into electrical terms are applied as voltage, to a stabilizing plant in which the pumps 24, 24<1> finally supply the stabilizing couple. The voltage delivered by the gyroscope 12 is applied to a thermionic valve 25 in the plate circuit of which are arranged a resistance 27 and inductance 26 so proportioned that the voltage arising at the output terminal of the valve is a time integral of the input voltage. The voltage applied by the manometers 1-3, 1<1>-3<1> is applied to the input of the valve 25<1>. The combined voltage is applied to an amplifier 31 which controls the output of the pumps 24, 24<1>. A device 32 may be provided to adjust the amplification ratio of the amplifier 31. A condenser form of manometer is described in which the elements comprise the diaphragm 37, Fig. 8, inserted in the ship's side and the fixed armature 38.
