592,917. Transmission systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and HARDISTY, R. W. June 8, 1945, No. 14559. [Class 40 (iv)] A volume control arrangement for broadcasting and similar systems comprises a source of sound signals located in a studio, a transmission line connecting the source to an amplifier located at a distant point and control means in the studio for controlling the resistance of a thermistor which forms part of the amplifier and controls the gain thereof. The arrangement may be used for mixing and then comprises a number of microphones 2 and 3 connected to amplifiers 16 and 17 and control stations 22 and 23 in the studio with lines 26 and 27 to control thermistors in the amplifiers. An additional source of sound 18 such as a recording device may be connected to an amplifier 19 and controlled from a station 24. The outputs of all these amplifiers may be combined in an amplifier 21 controlled from station 25. The amplifiers may comprise a valve 30 whose cathode is connected to earth through a bias resistance 31. The transmission line is connected to terminals 32 and 33 and the signals then pass through a transformer 34 and a thermistor arrangement to the grid of the valve. One thermistor has its resistance element 37 connected between the transformer and the grid while the other has its resistance 38 serving as the grid resistance. The output of the valve passes through transformer 39. Specifications 541,922, [Group XXXVI], and 558,757 are referred to.
