[Class 40 (ii)] [See also Group XL] For producing noiseless sound film records, electric sound currents are applied to the recording device through a class B amplifier, and the unidirectional current which flows in the plate circuit of the amplifier is utilized to bias the recording device in dependence on the amplitude of the sound currents. In addition, the unidirectional current may be used to control the amplification of the sound currents. As shown in Fig. 2, the recording device 10 is fed through a transformer by the class B amplifier and, the unidirectional current in the plate circuit K of this amplifier controls the bias of the recording device through a unilaterally conducting device 1 and resistances 2, 3 in conjunction with condensers 4, 9 This plate current also operates through resistances 5, 6, 7 on the grid bias of a preceding valve 8 to control the amplification of the sound currents. The grid bias battery 12 is here arranged across the resistance 7 in such a way that the amplification control operates only when the unidirectional plate current of the class B amplifier exceeds a given value. In a modification, the grid bias battery is in series with the resistance 7, and the amplification control extends over the whole range of amplitudes.
