Abstract

450,616. Valve amplifying circuits. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and MACFADYEN, K. A., c/o General Electric Co.. Ltd., Wembley, Middlesex. June 14, 1935, Nos. 17188 and 31148. [Class 40 (v)] In quiescent push-pull amplifiers (using a pair of approximately similar valves) in order to obtain maximum output with minimum distortion, the means provided for varying the grid bias applied to each valve are interconnected with means for varying the relation between the signal voltage and the input voltages to each valve. In this way, the grid bias adjustment individual to each valve and necessary to ensure that with no signal the prescribed anode current is the same for each valve is accompanied by a simultaneous input voltage adjustment so that the negative grid bias may be substantially equal to the amplitude of the greatest input voltage applied to the grid. In the arrangement shown, input voltage potentiometers 8 are connected across separate secondaries 7 and adjustable input tappings 12 are connected with the respective grids. Tappings 9 on the grid-bias potentiometer 10 are connected to the inner ends of the potentiomotors 8. The controls of the two tappings 9, 12 associated with each valve are mechanically interconnected. If the potentiometers are of the same length. the ganging provides that the distance of a tapping from the positive end of 10 is equal to the distance of the corresponding tapping 12 from the inner end of the potentiomotor 8. In a modification, the secondaries 7 are two halves of a divided transformer and a single potentiometer, centre-tapped, is connected across its ends. The centre taps of potentiometer and transformer are interconnected by the source of grid-bias so that the single potentiometer serves as two, each with an adjustable tapping connected with its grid. This form may be used to supply a number of parallel pairs of valves, each additional pair requiring an extra pair of adjustable tappings.
