Abstract

566,844. Valve modulating circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 10, 1943, No. 14867. Convention date, Nov. 16, 1942. [Class 40 (v)] In order to avoid distortion in an anodemodulated carrier amplifier, an impedanceinverting line or network is interposed between the carrier source and the input of the amplifier. As shown, the carrier is fed to a push-pull preamplifier D, which feeds the modulated amplifier A through a quarter-wave line N. The tuned output circuit 11 of stage D and the tuned input circuit 15 of stage D are arranged to match the impedance of the respective valves with that of the line N. The anode supply circuit of the stage A includes a transformer secondary coil 29, the primary of which is in the output circuit of a signal amplifier B. The modulating stage A operates as a Class C amplifier, and the maximum signal voltage in coil 29 is made equal to the H.T. supply voltage. As the anode voltage of stage A varies, the input impedance of this stage also varies and this normally gives rise to distortion. A rise of input impedance of stage A is, however, owing to the action of the impedance inverter N, accompanied by an increased carrier output from the stage D, and distortion is thus corrected or reduced. The quarter-wave line may be replaced by an equivalent network, and the impedance-matching networks 11, 15 may be replaced by transformers, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown).
