Abstract

458,672. Rotary engines. FARESO, J., 37, Walmer Road, North Kensington, London. May 21, 1935, No. 14834. [Class 110 (ii)] A rotary internal-combustion engine (which may be modified to act as a pump) comprises a compressor chamber 3a and a working-chamber 3, each having a rotor 1 or 1a with a radial piston 2 or 2a, and a rotary abutment 6 or 6a. Sealing means for the pistons include members 9b provided with spring strips slidable in slots, and pivoted levers 14 which under centrifugal action press outwards on the underside of each piston 2 and retract the packing members radially and axially, or radially only. Split sealing rings 39, 37 are provided in the casing walls, and each ring has two radial projections to prevent rotation. The mixture compressed in the chamber 3a passes to the explosion chamber 3 via an elongated duct 23a in the abutment 6a, an axial slot 26 in the casing wall, and a slot 23 in the rotor 6. Sealing plates 28, 28a are provided. Gears 32 couple the rotor shafts 33,34. The abutments may be of greater width than the rotors 1, 1a. To allow for expansion due to heating of the rotors, the shafts 33, 34 may be arranged in a link bearing 45, Fig. 8, which has flat sides 46 which engage the casing wall. A clearance 47 is provided. A suction valve may be placed in the working- chamber which opens the chamber to atmosphere if the pressure falls below atmospheric. Specifications 427,545 and 458,745 are referred to.
