Abstract
313,280. Lees, A., and Lees, H. May 14,1928. Fixed - abutment type; working - fluid supply; driving arrangements for motors; packing drums, vanes, abutments, and the like.- A rotary engine with axially sliding vanes working in undulating channels in the stator end covers or on undulating cam surfaces projecting into channels in the rotor has the undulations formed so as to provide alternate deep and shallow working spaces. In Fig. 4 is shown a diagram of a steam engine or of a gas engine supplied with precompressed mixture; the cam surface touches the rotor R at the point HP<1>, forms a shallow chamber into which the steam or gas enters through a port I<1> at pressure, and a deep chamber EC<1> in which expansion of the steam or of the gases, after ignition, takes place since this chamber is cut off from the inlet I<1> bv the following vane V. Fig. 8 shows a modification suitable for use as a four-stroke internal combustion engine. Gas drawn into a deep chamber SC<1> is compressed in a. shallow chamber CC' and after ignition at I<1> expands in a second deep chamber FC<1>; a second shallow chamber EC<1> serves as a baffle or abutment whereby the gases are exhausted. If the vanes are divided and pressed apart by springs this second shallow chamber may be modified by extending the surface up to the rotor. The slots S, Fig. 20, in which the vanes slide in the rotor R are of a shape to prevent radial pressure, due to centrifugal force, on the stator. A clutch MCM may be incorporated between the rotor R and the driving shaft DS as shown in Fig. 10. A sequence of alternate deep and shallow working chambers may be arranged around the stator. A number of concentric working chambers may be provided for a rotor and a number of rotors may he arranged axially, being separated by suitably channelled and ported partitions. Labyrinth packings may be provided and also spring-pressed packing members at the point of contact of the channel and rotor.
