Abstract

1427038 Rotary positive - displacement fluid machines H W GARTON 12 Feb 1974 [13 Feb 1973] 7026/73 Heading F1F In an I.C. engine air, or fuel and air mixture, is inducted into a space L through an inlet LA and compressed in a space M by vanes C1 ... C6 on a rotor B with combustion chambers G, fuel being injected, or the mixture being ignited, at 12. The expanded combustion products are ejected through an opening OA. The vanes have sealing strips D and may be linked in pairs by either rigid couplings U or pivoted links (S), Fig. 5 (not shown). Counterweights (T), Fig. 6 (not shown), may be coupled to the vanes. Seals E, H, DA may be disposed, as shown, in the casing and rotor. Pressures on the radially outer edges of the vanes are said to be counterbalanced by pressures on undercut portions on the trailing, and possibly leading, sides of the vanes. Additional compression or pumping of a coolant and/or lubricant may be effected in a chamber W. The engine may be adapted for use as a steam engine, motor or pump.
