Fixed-abutment type; m o u nt i n g rotors on shafts; balancing moving parts; valves, distribnting and cut-off.-In a rotary engine or the like in which a ring piston 5 gyrates in contact with concentric rings 3, 4 on a fixed casing and is carried by a plate 6 which bears on the concentric rings 3, 4 to enclose the working space, the piston is movably mounted on the shaft, and so arranged that rotation of the shaft causes the piston plate and ring to bear tightly against the contacting surfaces. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the ring- piston supporting plate 6 has fixed thereon a block 19 which engages a recess in an enlarged boss 22 on the shaft 23 and has wings or lugs 20 sliding in inclined grooves 21 in the boss 22 so that on axial movement of the shaft 23 the piston plate 6 is first moved axially and made to bear on the concentric rings 3, 4 and then moved radially so that the piston ring 5 bears tightly at its contact point. The axial movement of the shaft 23 is obtained by inclined teeth 29 on a ring 26, rotated by an external drive shaft 31, which engage inclined teeth 30 on a sleeve 28 fixed to the shaft 23; alternatively the axial movement may be obtained by an arrangement of helical slots engaging the external drive shaft. To balance the effect of the pressure difference between the inlet and discharge on the plate 6, the latter may be exposed at the side of low pressure to recesses in the bearing surfaces of the fixed rings communicating with the high pressure side. An alternative arrangement is shown in Fig. 1 consisting of a bell 42 pressing on the plate 6 and eccentrically disposed so that high pressure fluid leading past the plate 6 only acts on the outside surface of the plate over the area not enclosed by the bell, this latter area being open to the atmosphere or a vacuum. The piston is controlled by a pivoted link 9. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the provision of grooves 44, 45, Fig. 12 (Cancelled), in the plate 6 which extend across the fixed concentric rings 3, 4 and open into working-fluid supply chambers in the casing. In this modification the combined axial and radial tightening movement of the piston is effected by an obliquely arranged spring 57 in a boss 54 on the shaft. The inner and outer working chambers may be in series and a duplex arrangement may be provided by having piston rings 5 on both sides of the plate 6. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
