Abstract

716,672. Rotary engines; stuffing-box substitutes. STURM, G. E. June 25, 1952 [June 26, 1951; Sept. 14, 1951], No. 15991/52. Classes 110(2) and 122(5) In a fluid drive transmission including a rotary engine, the latter is of the radially sliding-vane type, the vanes 9 being guided between internal centring rings 34, or shoes in casing grooves, and slippers 9<SP>1</SP> which slide around the casing bore. The inner end of each vane may be curved on a radius r, Fig. 7. struck from the centre of a slipper, and is exposed to oil in chambers 16, 16<SP>1</SP>, 19 provided with sealing means at the ends. Oil seeping from the working chamber 10 and past the sides of the vanes 9, collects in the chambers 16, 16<SP>1</SP>, 19. The sealing means comprise dished spring washers 17, 17<SP>1</SP> or modified washers as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 6. When the oil pressure exceeds a certain value, the washers 17, 17<SP>1</SP> lift, acting as relief values. In Fig. 3, a ring piston 25 is mounted for axial movement in a recess 24 and is pressed by oil against a rigid washer 22 which abuts a circlip 26. A spring may be inserted in the recess 24. Fig. 6 shows a cut-away groove 32 of the hub 13 giving a resilient end 33. Oil leaking along an axle 8 collects in a gap 20 between a spigot 7 and the shaft 6 and is drained away through holes 21. The rotor hub 2 is mounted in two ball-bearings 3, 3<SP>1</SP> in a transmission housing 5. The rotor 1 rotates around the spigot 7 which is provided with inlet and outlet passages leading to the second unit. The working chamber 10 is enclosed in a casing comprising a ring 11 and end covers 12, 12<SP>1</SP> mounted in bearings 14, 14<SP>1</SP> in a casing carrier 15 which may be adjusted to vary the eccentricity in the housing. In place of the centring rings, the vanes may be provided with shoes which move around annular grooves in the covers 12, 12<SP>1</SP>. The shoes may be wider than the vanes Fig. 10 (not shown).
