456,779. Cigarette -making or like machines. QUESTER, C., and QUESTER, K., (trading as KOLNER WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK VON W. QUESTER), 282, Berrenratherstrasse, Sulz, Cologne, Germany. Aug. 6, 1935, No. 22207. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Feb. 4, 1936.] [Class 130] In a cigarette or like machine radial adjustment of a knife carried .by a rotating carrier is effected through a differential gear while the machine is in operation. As shown, the knife 6 is carried by a toothed rack 10 in a carrier 1 which is rotated about a shaft 2. The differential gear comprises a bevel wheel 26 which is driven at twice the speed of the carrier 1 through a coupling 37, a second wheel 27 which is normally held stationary and a third wheel 28 which is carried by the casing and rotates at the same speed' as the knife carrier. To adjust the knife 6, a coupling 32, 33 is disengaged and the wheel 27 rotated by a hand wheel 35. The differential gear then causes a spur wheel 21 to rotate a wheel 20 which through gearing 16, 12, 11 operates the rack 10 to move the knife 6 radiallv in the carrier. The bearing 18 of the shaft 17 may be mounted eccentrically in the carrier so that the gearing 16, 12 can be disengaged and the knife adjusted or exchanged when the cutting mechanism is out of operation. In modified constructions, (1) the differential gear is formed by spur wheels, (2) the wheel 35 is mechanically rotated either intermittently or continuously, (3) to obtain a continuous adjustment of the knife, the carrier 1 is directly connected to the wheel 26 and (4) the carrier 1 may have a reciprocatory motion, parallel to a cigarette rod, as well as a rotary motion and if the differential gear is not to reciprocate the breadth of the wheel 21 is such that it remains in engagement with the wheel 20. The invention may be applied to a knife for cutting lengths of tobacco rod for insertion in paper tubes or to a knife for cutting cigars from a rod.
