Be it known that I, Enxs'r Cun'r Mi'mL- anion, a citizen of the Kingdom of Saxony, (lermun Em )ire,residinginDresden-Ltibtau, in the Kingdom of Saxony. in said Empire, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Making Machines, of which the following is a specification.
In cigarette making machines producing a continuous rod or string of cigarettes whereof the ti )8 are covered, for instance with metal foil. it is imperative that the blade severing the string or rod of tobacco cut exactly through the middle of each such covering. It is. however, impossible to avoid an inaccuracy in the course of the operation owing to small irregularities in the distance between the gold tip )ings and the printing, which may already caused by he varying percentage of moisture in the paper. Therefore the cut will not always be exactly in the middle of the tip covering. in order to compensate these irregularities without varying the velocity of the string and without changing the intervals of the successive cuts, it is necessary to produce for a brief space of time a lead or a delay with regard to the cutter. For obtaining this object it has been proposed to arrange a countershaft in the driving mechanism of the cutter slide. the driving member of which countershaft can be displaced with reference to the driven member. By such displacement of one gear wheel to the other an acceleration or a retard in the travel of the slide can be produced, according to the character of such displacement, and thereby the position of the slide can be varied with reference to the string or rod of cigarettes. It is, however, not only necessary to bring the cutter slide into the correct position to the string, but also the cutting motion of the cutter must be temporarily varied, without changing the number of cuts per minute. so that the cut will be made at the proper moment of the stroke of the slide, even after the latter has been displaced. If, new with the arrangement su gested the regulating countershaft acts sole y on the drive of the cutter slide, a special arran ement will have to be provided for regtilating the cutting motion. This, however necessitates a double adjustment, beside the fact that a double gear is required.
.-\ccording to the present invention the regulating shaft is arranged in such a manner. that it will act both on the travel of the cutter slide and on the cutting motion of the cutter. The result of this is that with the aid of one single gear and by the adjustment of one single gear wheel both the cutter slide and also the device for imparting the cutting operation to the cutter is brought into the proper relation to the cigarette string. in such a manner, that the cutting motion is regulated in a positive manner with the travel of the cutter slide, so that no irregularities can occur between these two )arts.
Wlien changing from one length of cigarettes to another-thus when either the velocity of the string or the number of cutting strokes or cuts is varieda fresh regulation of the position of the cutter slide relatively to the string is especially required. It. will then not be sutiicient to slightly displace the members of the rcgulatin shaft with respect to each other to bring t 1e out also with t ie new length of cigarette exactly into the middle of the tipping cover. \Vhereas it was hitherto neccssarv to partly remove the countershaft wheels for this purpose, so as to allow of the necessary displacement being effected, this is avoided with the resent invention by the eouutershaft consisting of a gear wheel as driven member, which can be rolled around the driving wheel. Bv thus rolling the driven wheel around the rivin wheel it is possible to compensate great di 1 fcrences between the position of the slide and that of the string, as a large angle is available for the lead or the delay, whereas with the suggested older arrangements the displacement is only possible within a small angle.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings represents a plan view of one einbodiwent of this invention. showing the rod feeding mechanism and the rod cutting mechanism in connection with a driving mechanism which embodies the preferred form of my regulating means. Figs. 2 and 3 are diagrams representin the cutter in the erroneous positions which in the ordinary machines it is liable to assume on opposite sides of the normal line of severance. Fig. 4- represents on an enlarged scale a vertical longitudinal section of the primary sectional shaft which serves as a combined driving and re ulatin shaft for the machine and the differential gear operatively connecting the two sections thereof. Fi 5 represents on an enlarged scale a plan view of the sectional primary shaft, the differential gears operatively connecting the sections thereof, the sectional secondary shaft. the transmitting gears operatively connecting the parallel sections of said shafts respectively and parts of the transmitting mechanisms for communicating motion from the latter to said rod feeding and rod cutting mechanisms.

The rod feeding mechanism may be of any suitable construction. .\s illustrated in the drawings it comprises the endless belt I) and its inunediate driving devices a, which need not be. here described in detail. The rod cutting mechanism may also be of any suitable construction comprising an ordinary cutter slide (1 carrying a laterally movable cutter c for severing the cigarette rod. The driving mechanism for said rod feeder and rod cutter includes a secondary shaft composed of two sections It and 7t disposed in alinement and adapted to rotate independently of each other. The section it. is o wratively connected with the inuncdiatc driving devices of the feeder by the bevel gears 1. The section It is operatively connected with the reciprocating devices of the cutter slide by the bevel gears 1'. said reciprocating devices comprising an eccentric k and the usual devices appurtenant thereto. The section It is also operatively connected by a cam disk I and an arm at with a sleeve n, which is fitted to the shaft 0 of the cutter holder 0. so that the rocking of said arm produces a lateral cutting motion of the cutter c in the usual manner.
A primary shaft composed of two sections r and n disposed in alincment and retatable independently of each other, constitutes the driving shaft of the machine. A spur geargi' loose on the section '1' of the primary sha t meshes with a spur gear 7) fast on the section I: of the secondary shaft and these gears serve to transmit motion from said section 1' to said section It. The huh of the gear 7) serves as a clutch member. A driving pulley and clutch member q rotatable wit and slidable on the section '1' engages said hub q to start and stop the machine, being actuated by the shipper lever q. A spur gear w fast on the section '1) of the rimary shaft meshes with a spur gear 11) ast on the section h of the secondary shaft, whereby motion is transmitted from section w to said section It.
A differential gearing transmits motion from the independent section 1' of the .rimary shaft to the section '11 thereof. his
differential gearing comprises a large pinion a fast on the inner end of the section 9 and a s l aller pinion 8 fast on the inner end of the section r. A rotatably adjustable disk -I' preferably in the form of a worm wheel. has a hub which is loose on the inner end of the section r adjacent to the pinion .s'. This disk is provided on its outer face with a lateral stud t. A sleeve n loose on said stud has preferably integral therewith at its inner end a smaller pinion it which meshes with the. larger pinion s of the section r and at its outer end also preferably integral therewith a larger pinion n which meshes with the smaller pinion .s' of the section 1!. These pinions are of such relative diameters as to impart the proper relative motions in regular sequence to the rod feeding mechanism and the rod cutting mechanism through the medium of the sectional secondary shaft and the devices connected therewith as hereinbefore set forth.
By turning the rotary disk .r more or less through the arc of a circle in one direction or the other, the action of the rod cutting mechanism with relation to the rod fcedim mechanism may be accelerated or retardcti and such adjustment will sinniltaneously effect at one operation the longitudinal movement. of the cutter slide and the lateral movement of the cutter.
.\ny suitable means may be provided for turning the adjusting disk :1! to effect the adjustment thereof. The means shown for this purpose comprise peripheral teeth m on said disk and a worm 3/ engaging said teeth and disposed on a shaft 1 which is provided with a hand wheel As the worm wheel 1/ turns the rotary disk or. the differential pinions 1/ and u. are carried bodily by the stud i through an arc of. revolution and roll on the pinions s and a. if the rotary disk be. turned in the same direction in which the section 1- rotatcs such motion of the disk will be added to the motion of said section and the speed of the section 1) will be increased; on the contrary if the rotary disk :1; be turned in a direction opposite to the rotation of the section 1-, such movement will be subtracted from the transmitting motion of said shaft and the speed of the section t. will be reduced. Thus the cutter may be adjusted during the operation of the machine to the normal line of severance, such as the middle of the band which forms two and tips.
I claim:
1. In a cigarette machine the combination of a cigarette rod feeding mechanism. a cigarette rod cutting mechanism, a secondary shaft composed of inde endent rotarv sections, transmitting means )etween one of said sections and said feeding mechanism for operating the latter, means between the other section and said cutting mechanism for impartin a reciprocatory motion to the cutter slide tiereof, means between the same section and said cuttin mechanism for imparting a lateral oscillation to the cutter thereof, a prin'iary shaft composed of independent rotary sections disposed in alinement, separate gearings between the res ective sections of said primary and secont ary shafts, a differential gearing connecting the adjacent sections of said )rnnary shaft, and means for adjusting sai differential gearing to simultaneously accelerate or retard the diverse movements of said cutting mechanism during the operation of the machine.
2. In a cigarette machine the combination of a cigarette rod feeding mechanism. a cigarette rod cutting mechanism. a secondary shaft composed of independent rotary sections. transmitting means between one of said sections and said feeding; mechanism for operating the latter. means between the other section and said cutting mechanism for impartilw a 1'e(.'i])l'ocat(n' motion to the cutter slide thereof, means between the same section and said cutting mechanism for impartin e a lateral oscillation to the cutter thereof. a primary shaft composed of independent rotary sections disposed in alinement. se iarate gearings between the res )OC- tire sections of said primary and StCOltt' ary shafts. a differential gearing connecting the adjacent sections of said shafts and comprising pinions of different diameters fixed on opposite ends of said sections. a rotary disk provided with a hub loose on one of said sections and carrying a lateral stud and a sleeve loose on said stud and provided with pinions of different diameters engaging said primary shaft pinions, and means for adjusting said rotary disk to accelerate or retard the diverse moven'ients of said cutting mechanism during the operation of the machine.
3. In a cigarette machine the con'ibination of a cigarette rod feeding mechanism, a cigarette rod cutting mechanism. a secondary shaft composed of independent rotary sections, transmitting means between one of said sections and said feeding mechanism for operating the latter. means between the other section and said cutting mechanism for imparting a reciprocatory motion to the cutter slide thereof, means between the same section and said cutting mechanism for imparting a lateral oscillation to the cutter thereof, a primary shaft composed of independent rotary sections disposed in alinement. separate gearings between the res icetire sections of said primary and secom ary shafts. a differential gearing connecting the adjacent sections of said shafts and comprising pinions of different diameters tixcd on opposite ends of said sections, a rotary toothed disk provided with a hub loose on one of said sections and cariying a lateral stud and a sleeve loose. on said stud and provided with pinions of ditl'erent tiliameters engaging said primary shaft pinions. and a worm engaging said toothed disk to accelcrate or retard the diverse movements of said cutting mechanism during, the operation of the machine.
