Abstract

456,069. Walls. HUXLEY, J. H., West House, Addison Crescent, West Kensington, London. May 4, 1935, No. 13347. [Classes 20 (iv) and 87 (i)] Building-blocks 1 for wall constructions are provided with dowelling devices which are so disposed that when the blocks are assembled with each block superposed on two lower blocks, the engagement of the dowels results in a spacing of the lower blocks to accommodate jointing material. Sockets may be provided in the upper and lower faces of the blocks for use with loose dowels 2, or dowels with splayed shanks 2a may be set in concrete in the upper faces of the blocks, sockets being provided in the lower faces. The dowels may be split as at 2b to make tight engagement with the sockets. The blocks may be formed with panel recesses 10 on one face. The wall may be formed by spaced parallel walls of superposed blocks tied by wall ties 6 having ring ends to engage over the dowels, and a downwardly extending centre portion 14 to prevent passage of water to the inner wall. Concrete may be filled in between the walls. The upper faces of the blocks may be recessed around the dowel to accommodate the ends of the wall ties, so that the ends of the wall ties lie flush with or below the surface of the blocks. Corners may be formed by curved blocks 1c abutting against full size blocks 1 and half blocks 1b in alternate courses and tied to the inner wall by ties 6. Where two or more tie-ends engage with one dowel, these ends may be flattened so that the total thickness does not exceed the depth of the recess in the blocks. Square corners may be formed as shown by Fig. 3a, or by square or rectangular blocks as shown by Fig. 3b. An embankment 8a, Fig. 6, may be faced with blocks 1 having a glazed &c. face 1a tied to rods 8 which are set at their lower ends in concrete 8b and have pointed upper ends engaging in the embankment, concrete being filled into the space between the wall and the embankment. The blocks may be of breeze, Portland and other stone, porcelain, granite, cast-iron, pressed steel rendered rust-proof, firebrick, or plastic material.
