Abstract

455,805. Rotary engines. MARTIN, B. L., Martins, Abinger Common, Surrey. June 28, 1935, No. 18552. [Class 110 (ii)] A rotary internal-combustion engine (which may be modified to act as a compressor or pump) comprises an eccentric rotor b in a stator a, and vanes c which are pivoted through lugs c<1>, c<2> to a fixed spindle d. Cup-shaped members e are fitted on the spindle d and strengthen the vanes against centrifugal action through their flanges which are positioned within recesses c<3> in the vanes. Each vane slides between two D-shaped members g, g<1> which are journalled at their ends in the rotor. A clearance is provided between the vane tips and the casing. Air is admitted through a port h, compressed, and fuel is injected through one or more nozzles i. The gases expand and are exhausted through a port j. The port h is extended as shown to admit air to a space being exhausted, for scavenging purposes. Water for sealing purposes enters through a passage a<2> to a space g<6>, and feeds grooves c<5>, c<6> at the edges of the vanes, through grooves c' in the stator. Grooves g<6> prevent the water from entering the rotor. The grooves c<5>, c<6> communicate with grooves in the vane tips, which contain each a packing bar c<9> pierced by holes to permit entry of the water to the underside of each bar. Water also flows into a groove a<3> to seal the rotor. The water in the grooves forms into steam due to the high temperature of the metal. The groove a<3> may be shallow in the high pressure region, and deep in the low pressure region, and may be vented in the region of the exhaust port. The steam may be condensed and used again. Additional grooves for water are provided on the stator and rotor, arranged obliquely. Cooling jackets a<9> are provided in addition to flanges a<11> which may be enclosed to contain water. Oil may pass to the rotor through a hole f<6>, and leave by holes b<8>, or air may pass through. If combustion takes place in alternate vane chambers, the air in the idle chambers may be used for cooling purposes. Water may be injected into the working chambers. An additional impeller for supplying compressed air, may be provided on the working shaft. Gas may be used for sealing purposes in place of water. Combustion may take place in alternate chambers.
