Abstract
Water-insoluble compounds of metals of the fourth group of the periodic classification, including tin and titanium, are fixed on textiles by impregnating with a double salt of a weak polybasic acid with a volatile nitrogenous base and one of said metals, then decomposing the double salt with formation of the insoluble compound on the material. Suitable double salts are ammonium titanium tartrate, carbonate, oxalate or citrate, ammonium stannic oxalate, &c. The ammonia may be replaced by methylamine, p ethylamine or the like. The double ammonium salts are readily decomposed by heat in presence of moisture or with the aid of steam and ammonia as described in Specification 441,869. The solution may be applied locally to obtain patterned lustre effects; the impregnation and decomposition may be carried out continuously. Wetting agents or swelling agents may be incorporated in the solution, or the material may be pre-treated with such agents; a titanium salt, e.g. the oxalate or tartrate, may be employed in sufficient concentration to cause a swelling action. In examples: (1) a lustrous cellulose acetate fabric is padded with a solution containing 5 per cent of diethylene glycol and ammonium titanium tartrate in quantity equivalent to 2,5 per cent of titanium dioxide. The padding mangle is adjusted so that the fabric retains 150 per cent of its weight of the liquor. The material is steamed for 10 mins in the presence of a little ammonia, washed and dried. The lustre is considerably reduced; (2) A regenerated cellulose artificial silk fabric is padded with a solution of titanium ammonium carbonate having a titanium content equivalent to 1,5 per cent of titanium dioxide, so that the material retains 150 per cent of its weight of liquor. The material is then dried and steamed, and its lustre reduced.
