Abstract
Textile fabrics are subjected at normal temperatures to the action of formaldehyde in the presence of a proportion of free acid and a high concentration of a salt having a strong affinity for water but without a specific swelling effect on cellulose. Suitable salts are the chlorides of calcium, aluminium, and magnesium, which preferably are used in concentration of 70 per cent of the saturation concentration. The process may be carried out in two stages, (1) impregnation of the fabric with formaldehyde solution followed by drying, and (2) treatment with the salt solution containing free acid. The process may be used to increase the resistance of fabrics to creasing, or to render mechanical ornamental effects, e.g. embossing, glazing, or schreinering, fast to washing. The mechanical effect may be applied before the first or second step in the two-step process.
