Abstract

453,806. Shaft couplings. LAKE, H. P., 35, Alderbrook Road, Balham, London. Oct. 22, 1935, No. 29173. Addition to 433,495. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXVIII] The quick-release coupling of the parent Specification is provided with axially -movable tubular shrouds adapted to protect the engagement projections when the coupling-members are connected or disconnected. Coupling- members 10, 10a, Fig. 4, for connecting hose pipes are brought together and then rotated to cause a pair of toothed members 21 on the member 10 to engage with complementary members 21a on the member 10a. During the axial movement, tubular shrouds 14, 14a surrounding the members 10, 10a respectively are pushed back against the action of springs 17, 17a owing to the engagement of the ends of the members 10, 10a with lugs 19, 19a projecting radially inwardly from the shrouds, and after the rotational movement the shrouds are pressed forward and engage between interengaged pairs of members 21, 21a to prevent release thereof by relative angular movement. The members 14, 14a have telescopic engagement with each other to prevent dust from entering the joint, and fluid-tightness is secured by means of rubber rings inserted in annular grooves in the abutting faces of the members 10, 10a. In a modification, Fig. 7, rubber rings 27, 27a are inserted in recesses in the ends of coupling-members 10, 10a and are cut-away to receive flanges on liners 28 which may be split to allow of removal and may be made of material inert to the fluid. A loose washer 32 of triangular section is placed at each end of the coupling to resist the tendency of the hose pipes to crack due to flexing and to improve the flow of the fluid. In a further modification, the rubber rings 28, 28a are not shaped to receive the flanges but are pressed into shape thereby, and the sleeves are split and extend only partly into the members 10, 10a.
